Hamdard College of Medicine and Dentistry (HCM&D) trains students for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Dental Surgery. These degrees will be awarded to candidates who successfully complete all requirements set out in the rules and regulations specified by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC). The college is located at the main campus of Hamdard University located in the northern part of Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan.

Introduction

The program of studies for the award of M.B.B.S. degree has been so designed as to produce disciplined, knowledgeable, motivated and hard working graduates, with emphasis on community orientation, especially rural communities.

The purpose of this program is to equip the graduates with enough theoretical knowledge, psychomotor skills and clinical understanding as laid down by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council so that they are able to compete with the best available in the field.

The college admitted its first M.B B.S batch in 1994 and since then numerous students have graduated. Four batches of BDS have qualified and another batch is about to graduate. The College has been granted registration by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. HCM&D is included in the list of permanent members of PMDC under council’s ordinance 1962 (Schedule I, III-A and V).[1] The college is also included in the WHO directory for accredited medical intitutes.[2]

Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry (HCMD) is located in a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere at Madinat al Hikmah (City of Wisdom), the city of education, science and culture on the northern suburbs of Karachi. The main university campus has one of the largest and the best library not only in Pakistan but also in South East Asian , the Bait al Hikmah(House of Wisdom)

The Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry is the culmination of the dreams of a great philanthropist, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, the founder Chancellor of the Hamdard University. The College enjoys a high ranking amongst medical institutions of the country and is recognized by the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council. The College is also included in the Directory of Medical Schools of World Health Organization. The College is proud of its graduates for gaining excellence in the various fields of medicine and dentistry, inland and across the world. They scored significantly and won laurels in examinations like Membership of College of Physicians and Surgeons (MCPS) Pakistan, Fellowship of College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) Pakistan, United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), Professional and Linguistic Assessments Borad (PLAB), MOH Examinations of GCC Countries, U.S board certifications, Membership of the Royal Colleges in the United Kingdom, M.Sc. (Dentistry) etc.

Our students enjoy a collegial atmosphere with each other and with our highly qualified and experienced faculty who have missionary zeal for producing excellent academic atmosphere. Regular international symposia are held by Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences to keep the faculty abreast with latest updates and to let them exchange their researches with experts from abroad.

The Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry lays great emphasis not only on producing medical and dental graduates but to inculcate into them a research oriented approach of problem solving. This training starts well before the completion of the course. The clinical training is combined with practice on simulated models and manikins to improve practical skills.

The College aims to equip the student for lifelong learning against a background of ever evolving knowledge and health systems.

Clinical training

The clinical training is an integral and important aspect of medical education.[3] Realizing its significance, the College imparts clinical training at Hamdard University Hospital (Taj Medical Complex, M.A. Jinnah Road),Hamdard University Dental Hospital (North Nazimabad), and K.V. Social Security Hospital,(S.I.T.E).

Hamdard University Hospital

Hamdard University Hospital, a 300-bedded teaching hospital, has Department of Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics, Otorthinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Orthopedics, Dermatology and Psychiatry. Hospital has the facilities of ICU, Dialysis Unit, Lithotripsy, Physiotherapy, Pathological Lab, Neonatal ICU, Imaging, Emergency, Out Patient Department, pharmacy etc. The Hospital has the facility of clinical skills lab, Learning Resource Center (LRC), Pathological Museum, Digital Library for medical students.

The hospital is a recognized institution for clinical internship(House Job)[4] offered in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT and Psychiatry.It is also recognized by College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) for Fellowship training in General Surgery.[5]

Hamdard University Dental Hospital

The Hospital imparts clinical training to students of dentistry. It is equipped with state-of-art technology in dentistry. There are fifty Dental Units and the hospital provides services and training in the following disciplines:

Periodontology, Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics. The patient attendance is one of the highest in any private Dental Teaching Institution.

Admission procedure

Admission to the MBBS and BDS degree programs are subject to pass an admission test. Test conducted once in a year all over Pakistan. In addition to local Intermediate Science (Pre-Medical) students, overseas Pakistani students and international students are also welcome to write an entrance exam. No domicile or permanent residence certificate (PRC) is required.

Eligibility

Those who have passed Intermediate Science (Pre - Medical) examination with at least 60% marks in aggregate unadjusted from a Board of Intermediate Education of Pakistan in or before the year 2009 or those who have passed a higher examination of a Pakistani university with biological sciences, provided that the candidates have passed the Intermediate Science (Pre - Medical) with at least 60% marks or those who have passed any other examination of Foreign University, Examination Body which in scope and standard is found equivalent to Intermediate Science (Pre-Medical) recognized by Hamdard University.

For the purpose of determining merit, the scores of entrance test, academic re c o rd (Matric./F.Sc) and interview will be considered and each will receive the following weightage.

Admissions will be made on merit. Nobody will be denied on the basis of Caste, Color and Creed. There a re a few seats for foreign students and for those admitted on self-finance basis.

In addition to the certificate from a registered Dar- u l-Uloom, Hifz-e-Quran will also be required to pass the test of Hifz-e-Quran of the college.

Students eligible for admission to MBBS or BDS course at Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry are required to take an admission test. Candidates who are admitted should possess sound mental and physical health to be able to adopt medicine / dentistry as a profession. They will submit a medical fitness certificate but may be subjected to a re-examination by the College Authority, if deemed necessary.

Foreign Students: As per the requirement of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council overseas students should have:

  1. Three science subjects; Biology and Chemistry are essential subjects. The 3rd science subject could be Physics or Mathematics.
  2. Scored a minimum of 550 marks in each subject, ( Chemistry, Biology, Physics / Mathematics).
  3. A valid TOEFL OR IELTS with a score of 500 or 5.5.
